Lag?

Does anyone here know how this works? I play with a friend who has a horrible DSL connection and when i play with him I can literally see him sputtering along while I move around just fine. Then I have another friend who swears I lag his game all the time even though I'm moving just fine with a green latency bar. Is he trolling me? lol

Yes. mostly lag is because of your isp and not from other players. Blizzard can of course cause lag, with epic server hiccups (like that never happens)

Typically my latency is around 120-130 msec.

As far as I understand it anyways. Anyone else care to chime in?

yea, you cannot cause someone else lag, unless you're on the same lan and you're stealing bandwidth... whenever my wife fires up youtube.. i always lag for a few seconds

Well, my experience is this.

I live in South Africa, and play on Europe servers (closest ones we have). Normally my latency is 250ms - 350ms. I have friends with worse connections, and I can see them sputtering quite often. But it makes no difference to my latency whether I play with them or not.

BUT... what it can be is that your skills + your friend's skills are actually overloading his screen card, which is causing his framerate to drop. I mean, lets face it, with all visual skill effects going this is quite possible. So he feels slower play, even though his latency is still the same.

Latency is just the time data gets from you to the server and back, and is a technical measurable thing.
Lag on the other hand is sometimes used by gamers on how sluggish a game feels.
Its a combination of latency and frame-rate, and is not so measurable (afaik)

@Bort

Ahhh, so whirling around like a mad man with my barb may be messing him up after all. Good info guys.

@yoyo, barbs arent so bad, the worst are the mages with slow times and tornadoes, wd with a lot of pets and aoe and of course those monks with cyclones and 50%+ crit

I just remembered something else too.
Very fast movement speed also seems to cause some jittery problems.
I think it's because the server can't predict accurately where you will be.

I seem to recall problems (rubberbanding, and odd movement) when playing WW barb, even on my own.
But that might have been during bigger latency play.

@Bort

Yep, I rubberband all the time. Silly WW Barbs, messing it up for everyone, lol. Dropping all graphics options to bare minimum definitely helped with the framrate though.

@mowuffe

I agree, it's more them than me. ;)
