Reflect damage?

I have archon build for Wiz and it's going pretty well. I have a 2h staff that gives me 5.9 life steal. Sometimes when I fight an elite with reflect damage I can stand there and the life steal balances out the reflect and i'm fine, but other times i just get completely torn with the reflect damage. Does anyone know why there's a difference?? wot's going on? thanks for any help :)

maybe sometimes youre hitting only 1, while other times you're hitting 1+? I believe the reflect damage is proportional to the damage youre doing, so

more targets hit should = more damage = more reflection

I would lean towards euggie answer but also I'm wondering if certain monsters have a resistance to life steal. Maybe you're not stealing the full 5.9 on certain elites.

question: does reflect damage count as a hit?
I found a legendary axe last night, and one of the descriptions was "fight through the pain" which i read was a barb ability.... i'm wondering if i should use this axe?

reason being, sometimes I can't crit fast enough when there is only 1 or 2 monsters left, and I can't get ds up fast enough.... if ignore pain will proc against reflect damage/plague/arcane, then it could very well supplement my wiz....

thoughts?
