Hi Wizards,
Is it worth changing weapon with 600 LoH to a 3% Life steal and +320 INT ? I have 1200 INT now |
Lifesteal VS Life on Hit

Life steal is nerfed down to 20% of the value in inferno, so in general you have to have very high DPS to make it worthwhile. On the other hand, most skills have coefficients that reduce LoH (the same chances for the skill to proc Critical Mass). I don't have a link to the list handy, but for example the explosive blast rune that hits 3 times has a 33% chance for each hit.
Adding the 320 INT will obviously help your DPS and all resists assuming you're not losing any other stats. Even if your life steal is less effective than the LoH, you may opt for the higher DPS and resists depending on your preference. |

If can get about 1K life on hit, I believe it's more useful than life steal.

I Would recommend reading This about life steal > as well as this (specifically for Wizards)
After reading this, i have personally swapped from life on hit to life steal, im running dual wield with 5.5% life steal. If you are at 30K+ Dps (with a decent crit chance, around 30% + at least 150 CDMG) is when you would want to start looking at life steal being a viable health source. Life on hit is good for someone that is hitting one target over and over (e.g. a Barb using Frenzy), if you can do AoE Damage, i would recommend life steal over all other things |

once u reach that breakpoint of a steady 50k-60k dps, u can be fine with just around 3%+ Lifesteal and health globes.

@gnawol Great information in each of those posts, thanks for linking them.
Considering that how many of the WZ proc coeffs are .12-.2, it feels like LoH is arguably nerfed more than lifesteal in some cases. If you're using skills with really low coeffs or high damage (like EB doing nearly 300% in a single hit), then lifesteal probably becomes better than LoH around 20k DPS (as the wizard specific post estimated). The only thing I don't follow is why crit% and dam are factored into your estimate. Why would 30k DPS give different lifesteal results whether you have 5 or 30% crit chance? If anything, I'd expect the lower crit to be superior in terms of consistent healing. |

Thanks for the two reads gnawol.
I was always suggesting LoH to everyone that played Barbs or Monks but never really knew if it was helpful for wizards, or if life steal was better. It always feels good to learn something new. |

Life steal is a % of damage dealt, not just base damage, but critical hit damage as well. Thus making higher overall damage better for the % life steal to be maximized. |

@Baldy But crit % and crit damage are already factored into DPS.
An example for simplicity sake: Person A has 20k DPS with 0% crit. Person B has "base" 15k DPS, but has 20% crit to bring them to 20k DPS. Both character A and B's character sheets would say 20k DPS, even though B has 20% more crit. At 10% life steal, A would consistently heal 2k per second. B would usually heal 1.5k and occasionally it'd jump way over 2k when he crits. Over time, they'd both average to 2k per sec, but A would have more variance. Am I missing something here? |

@sabin Someone at 20K DPS with 0% crit will hit for 20k maybe once every 10 hits, he's got a pretty low chance of lifesteal being useful for him
Someone with 15K Dps and 20% crit is going to notice significant increase in life steal functionality than someone with 20k dps without crit chance. Give it a try, remove all your crit chance gear and go hit some mobs and see if you can hit 20k dps, most of the time you'll notice your hits do about 7-10k damage at most |

really depends on your dps

High DPS like 80k+ is a good time to start looking at life steal.

Agreed, once you reach 70-80k dps LS and a little regen is all I needed. 110-120k just regen will do.

In my experience, after passing 50k dps, life steal becomes more useful..

I mean, it doesn't take a geinus to figure this one out (not saying you are stupid). Life steal is based on percents, where LoH is flat. The higher your dps, the more viable Life steal is, whereas LoH doesn't really change except with ASI. You are expecially effected by a lower attack speed, because while you may have high dps, LoH solely relies on the # of hits, whereas Life steal benefits from simply high damage, whether that is slow and high or fast and low.

If I'm currently doing 55k dps with 800 LoH, roughly what LS would I need to match that? My CC is 55%, CD is 318%, and I'm currently a CM/SC wiz. Thanks!

Depending on what build you use.. I use an archon build myself and lifesteal turned out a lot better then LoH for me.
